4) OTOH Tom Jones's pipes are well and truly intact.
5) Sound... was it the BBC or the sound guys that fouled it up so badly? Several times there was a bad balance with backing vox overpowering the lead, or rhythm guitar louder than the solo. But what is it with Tom Jones? He had great sound - maybe he stipulated his own sound guy (he had his own band with him). One of the early acts (I think the act after Cliff) the bass guitar suddenly jumped up in the mix. Oh well... it was a complex show, so maybe things were going to go wrong.
6) One of the announcers mentioned them: The roadies did an amazing job turning the acts around so quickly.
7) For me it could have been less mainstream, more British. Before I start mentioning obscure traditional musicians, where the heck was Ray Davies? He wrote a string of very British hits in the 60s (the greatest of which was Waterloo Sunset). He'd have given more flavour to what was too often a pile of MOR blandness. Bellowhead would, I think, have been sensational on that stage and on that occasion.
Agreed! The last four points in particular.
