i'm looking for some pickups and hardware at a reasonable price, trying to avoid ordering in from stewart mac.. i know there is some available from cape town somewhere at a good price. a friend got me some before but i'm no longer in touch with him.and i think the retail stores are well over priced.
any ideas are welcome?

Try www.guitarfetish.com
They do the awesome GFS pickups that are a lot cheaper than your regular Duncan/ EMG/ Dimarzios. Also do some decent guitar hardware - not the absolute best, but far better than stock hardware.

Why not Stew mac btw?
Contact "The guitar shop" in durban. They import Tonerider stuff. You can speak to robert, he really knows what he's talking about and you can get a set for the price of a single SD ?

+1 on the GFS pickups
Malkav
What pickups are you wanting to go for?
For Dimarzio the only way that works is E-Bay, unfortunately the guys who had the agency in Cape Town lost it cause well they're probably idiots or they just didn't know the brand well enough to punt it.

i am loving this forum..
thanks for the replies.
not wanting to use stew mack because i am limited in time, and also the exchange rate, however i will be living in canada next year so thats when i will be ordering through stew mack.
so till then i'm just trying to get the cheapest option available, any 2 humbuckers will fill the blank, till i get it to canada. i just got back from there and it still took 3 weeks postage to get to me there.

Hi Boggum
Where are you based ?
What guitar are the 'buckers going in ?
I might be able to make a plan for you.

hi vv
i'm on a bit of a mission at the moment,in france.lovely snowy alps, but i'l be back in durban in 2 weeks, so been trying to line things up for when i get home,
i'm hoping to make a firebird (III, off the 64 model), haven't decided if i should make it a bass, never made one so up for the challenge.just got to find out how things change in the build and if i will be capable with my little knowledge. so everything is in the early stages, but i will be very greatfull if you can make a plan.
adios

Hmm let me see. You want to build a guitar but not order anything with StewMac? Please let me know where you get fretwire, bridges, nuts, let alone special tools locally?
Imho if you want to have a cheap guitar, buy a second hand one. If you want to have a custom guitar for the price of a standard one, building is an option. If you want to build to get something cheap it can only be mediocre - like what you get in the average clone shop.
Sean
Gearhead, you sound like someone I might know ?

hey gearhead
what i am saying is that i am looking at building with cheap parts for now because i will be living in canada or the states next year because i am taking this a step further and making a career out of this and the best place for me to get a start is over there, where i can source everything i need cheaper and better than stew mac because i am close on set up there
so i may not get everything i need right away but i am working out what i can get done with what is available. i'm not trying to get a cheap guitar, and this is def not my first build , i just dont feel that i should be sitting around and not building while in between things.i dont expect to finish it,but that would be cool
but i will be looking for a cheap 2nd hand to strip, thanks for that idea,
i have fretwire from a friend, bridges and nuts, well plenty of those lying around from friends who build and the specialty tools, please let me know what you mean because i built my last guitar, with out any of those, thats how i was taught.

just to name one: I bought a router bit at StewMac that has bearings between the cutter and the shaft, allowing one to cut deep cavities. If you try those deep ones using a straight cutter and a template it starts vibrating like you wouldn't believe. I read about the 'downward copier' router bit in one of my luthier books, looked all over but only found them at StewMacs. I am a big fan of theirs for having really everything and for having excellent service.
