There are songs that are actually good songs that suffer through association with a particular artist, or because the production was heavy-handed or insipid. This is why imaginative covers can sometime be really illuminating - they strip away the artist and/or production and show the song for what it is or recast it in a different context.

That depends on if you're a Michael Jackson fan or not. I'd imagine that your average HM fan wouldn't have had much truck with that or any other Jacko song. The whole world was not keen on Michael Jackson. I actually had very little trouble resisting the charms of the Thriller album, and I thought the production was very heavy-handed.

My point is that sometimes you can sell a song to an audience that wouldn't have paid much attention to the original because of it's association with a genre or artist by changing the context.

I recoil from just about anything that Celine Dion records - but there may be some songs that I'd quite enjoy if they were given a different treatment. OTOH she could take a song that I really like and, for me, completely wreck it.

I enjoyed the song, good stuff. Also enjoyed brothers in arms, great tone.

Re other parts of thread - I could not imagine a world without Michael Jackson's contribution. I can,however, imagine a much happier world without Celine - where there is no poverty and no greed or famine ?

Anyhow just be true to yourself in all you do and whatever you touch will turn to gold.....blah blah (this is what I tell my pupils - if you really put 100% of your heart and soul into whatever it is you are playing then at that precise moment you are the best guitarist in the world because basically no one else is 'you'!)

I second that, and I'll add that I doubt we'll ever see in our lifetime again such
a great talent, regardless of his personal issues, Im talking about his talents and music, dancing, music videos etc etc...

MJ, Madonna, Prince, Sting, Elvis, Beatles and a few more...very few more are
huge exceptions to any rule and without them the music would just no be the same.
If you dont like MJ its ok, but I think you're REALLY missing out ?
