RobbieZ I have a question that most likely has been debated before on the forum ???. I have no idea how to search for it :-[, so if it has been debated, can anyone please direct me to the thread. I will be looking to upgrade my current instrument before the end of this year. I will then build my “dream amp” and my “dream guitar”. The amp is a discussion for a later date. For now, I first need to start with the wood for the guitar. There are established woods to use to build a body, for example Ash, Alder. So also for the neck and fretboard. The fretboard, I was thinking of Rose wood. No surprise there. The neck, I was thinking of Maple. The body, now that is where I get stuck :-\. What wood would you recommend and why? Thinking of it, is Maple the best for the neck? A conservative estimate on completing instrument is around a year. Why so long, because I will use the minimum of power tools and it needs to be as perfect as possible. Thanks Robbie

Gearhead Yeah, agree with Mike, go figure this one with your ears only. The advantage of the well known wood species is imho that you know what you get. Start off by listening - the easiest part of a build by far. Apart from the wood, also take neck/body join into account; no Strat is a Strat without the bolt-on construction etc.
