Ole Henry popped by on Friday night at the Baxter Theatre to chat (spoken word, not a band or instrument in sight)... he has tamed a bit since Black Flag and Rollins band days but the political/gender equality etc. invective was still there, just wedged between Nat Geo and other travel anecdotes. Some of the best moments were his descriptions of a trip to North Korea, a trip to a Pentecostal snake handling church that had a rockin' band (complete with Pastor who's convinced moving to a goldtop LP from a Strat is what raised his playing game) and some stirring road tales from Black Flag days. Some things that really come across: his sincerity is obvious, he is genuinely a curious man and he's an interesting mix between ego and self-deprecation. There were not a lot of moments or new insights for me (other than his personal beliefs and behaviour that he describes), his delivery is not hyper-intellectual but here is the thing:
He walked on, wrapped the mic cable around his wrist, stood one foot forward and one back and started talking at pace with conviction, enthusiasm, humour and energy... Two hours and thirty-five minutes later (let me put that in numerals so we're clear: 2hrs 35min) he stopped. There was no long pause for breath, no um or ah, nothing but fluid tales, statistics and the occasional laugh from his belly. No moving (other than lifting his arms once to show how he had to tuck an alligator under his chin for Nat Geo), no water... and not one minute where I was bored or even where my attention was lost (no exaggeration). That's entertainment.

I had no idea he was here, would have liked to attend ☹

I missed him when he did his rant up here. Having read some of his stuff and seen him in films I'd say it would be a worthwhile excursion.

It was and he will be back. This is his second time in SA, expect another visit in a couple of years when the next tour kicks off ?

I'll definitely be there next time. Sad I missed the last time, but didn't have the dough this this year, too much GAS :'(
WHat a legend!
