But I'm surprised you have a Gibson with "cheap plastic". Are you sure it's not one of the modern artificial materials such as Tusq or Corian?

It might be Corian and on the Gibson website the specs confirm this. It certainly looks like plastic and affected the tuning on the guitar. Eugene van der Meulen filed and lubricated the slots for me. However, if one can use a beter material libke bone it should improve things.

A badly cut nut made from any material is going to effect tuning. IMO and as regards tone a nut only really effects the open strings. Priority is to get a well cut nut. The black Tusq is a bit on the slippery slide, low friction, so that might be an option to consider.
