Just got the Morgan back from Music Connection yesterday. Mando did a re-fret (which, in turn, meant a new saddle and a setup). The guitar is 10 years old (give or take) and so I don't think this is too bad a show. After the last setup I had done I was told there was not enough left in the frets to allow another dress.
A word for the guys at MC who were rigorous about the job to the extent of sending it into their PA room with one of the guitar sales guys to check the balance on the under saddle pickup.
OK... now the interesting thing for me is that suddenly there are certain licks for which... let's say I was not having a 100% success rate. Yesterday I played that Morgan for about 2 hours and exercised all of said licks with scary reliability. And I think it's this.... the frets and feeling the frets is a little input into knowing where your fingers are and where they're going to go. The was one little run that I have been practicing that involves parallel 6ths. Starting it was OK, but moving down the neck to the 2nd 6th (I hope that makes sense) I would often go a semitone flat on the 2nd string, even if I was really willing myself to be accurate dammit! Now that problem is no more, and I think it's because I am feeling the higher frets.
Whoa there! Don't all start rushing out to get 1/2 inch high frets fitted on my recommendation. This is how it feels to me, and I may have mis-analysed the situation, but I'm struck by the sudden increase in my success rate.
