Pick the Les Paul - A Friday Fun Game!

Two guitars:

Gibson Les Paul R9 and a Gibson Les Paul Studio, both played through a TC Electronics Hall of Fame reverb in to a Marshall Class 5. Settings for the reverb and amp were exactly the same, volume on the guitars was set to exactly the same. For the dirty track my modded TS9 was used, pedal settings remained the same for both takes.

Guitars were recorded with a Shure SM57 using Reaper, no post processing bar level adjustment.

Reinhard played the riffs, I recorded them.

Guitar 1 - Clean
Guitar 2 - Clean
Guitar 3 - Dirty
Guitar 4 - Dirty

See if you can guess which is which on the clean and overdriven tracks. ?

[clean | dirty] difference is much bigger than [R9 | studio] difference !!

I came to this conclusion by the time-honoured "eeny meeny miney moe" method.

I'll say that clip 2 and clip 3 are the Studio, 1 and 4 are the R9. I'll give my reasons if I'm right! ?

LOL! I'm starting to doubt myself since I was thinking how MY R9 and MY Studio compare to each other, forgetting my Studio isn't standard and I can't remember what the original pickups sound like! :-[ ?

What pickups does Reinhard's R9 have? Burstbuckers or Classic 57's and what are you running in your Studio?

That R9 has some very larney Timbuckers or something, basically PAFs. I think Nick's studio is still stock with some form of a Burstbucker set.

No idea. ? But (through my crappy laptop speakers) I like the sound of 2 and 3 a little bit more than the other two.

Firstly, don't get me wrong, I want an R9, badly. But the point of the test was to really strip away the internet arguements over chambering, finish, nashville vs abr-1 etc etc and if Reinhard and I could hear the difference between the two when played back to back.

Im quite confident that with a slight pickup height tweak they would sound even closer, infact I already dropped my bridge pickup treble side slightly after hearing this.
