Signature characters

I find it rather hard to squeeze a signature (according to convention - with good dealings and gear summary) into the 400 characters that we are given. I even get penalised for using smaller font (which saves pagelength) because it uses [html codes]. Why can some okes have a 640x480 picture blaring out of their signature space and I can't even put some small info?

Fair enough. I've raised it to 500 characters, but I don't want to take it any further.

Pictures are another thing... I've considered banning the use of pictures in signatures, but it hasn't become too prevalent yet and the few that are around I usually just apply an adblock filter for my own browsing peace of mind.

Characters take up space in the database - and the font size used doesn't matter. If the signature images are not stored in the database that underlies GFSA then all that is necessary is to store the URL - which would be stored as text and will be subject to the same limits as any other text.

I'm sure there are acceptable abbreviations that would work well.
I don't mind being "Wiz" ... there's 3 characters right there!

Correct, but any formatting requires the BB Code to be including as part of the text, which also counts towards the character limit.

The problem with images is a different one. While the images are remotely stored, if there are a few on a page it still affects both the page load times and the physical length of the pages (especially given ZA bandwidth constraints). Most folk do not know how to optimise their images for the web - or don't bother to any more.

I can do without the flashing gifs and the huge declarations of love for Ace Frehley. They're kind of a pain on other forums.
