Generally with boosts the way it works is if you add OD in front what you have it adds gain, and if you add an OD after what you have it can add volume (im thinking in terms of pedals...)
So since the drive channel gets drive from the preamp I'd say you'd need to put the OD in the effects loop to boost your amps gain. Otherwise you could use the pedal for your initial gain and then use the amp to boost on top of that. But I think if you send on OD into the front of a driven amp you will just get more gain...
I see your point... But now a pedal has both gain and volume settings. Now I can see why an increase in volume from a pedal before the pre-amp would tend to overload the amp, causing more drive, but surely this would be a similar predicament faced by active vs. passive pickups?
My point being, guitars with actives pups are louder than those with passives, if played through the same amp at the same settings, usually without causing breakup. So surely, depending on the volume settings of the pedal, you could increase the volume as well as the gain, if played guitar --> pedal --> amp?
