I started at 18 when working blue-collar with a bunch of smokers. Stopped for two months earlier this year for a girl. Started two weeks after break-up :-/
Pot on the other hand, was a daily habit from 15 until 19. Now it just makes me paranoid, aggressive, aggravates my anxiety and makes me delusional. Schizophrenia + pot = hell.
Proud to have kicked the pot, maybe I will kick smoking. But right now I need to focus on recovering from alcoholism and caffeine abuse.
I get addicted to anything and everything :-\
You can do it ?
Best of luck to you. Might I suggest replacing one addiction with a healthier one. Every time you feel like a drink, go for a jog. You will take your mind off the cravings and get addicted to the feel good hormones of exercise. Often giving up an addiction is very difficult, but it becomes "easier" if you can change your focus.
Also, associate the addiction with negative feedback: the addiction is controlled by your sub-conscience. You can say "I am going to sop" as many times as you want, but nothing will change because you are only communicating with your conscience. You must realize that your sub-conscience can only understand messages such as hormones and pain. Try wear a large rubber band elastic around your arm. Every time you are partaking in a bad habit (be it scratching your butt or lighting up) immediately pull back on that elastic and let it sting your wrist. After a while your sub-conscience will associate the habit with pain and will stop. This is similar to the techniques used on Pavlov's dogs (
