So writing music can be a stressful affair. Not to mention the fact that most small gigs take place in dark, smoky bars. Add to that the fact that lighting up a James Dean'esque fag and striking a pose goes a long way when you're pulling chicks... hey, that's why you started playing guitar isn't it? ;) So, the question is; how many of you are smokers? I'm trying to kick the habit (mainly 'cause it's robbing me of GAS money) but I still enjoy it waaaay too much. (old forum) Poll Results: Do you smoke? I started smoked cigarettes at age 13 ,Lucky Strike plain then Chesterfield plain. It was cool only jerks didn't smoke. Even in the army , the smokers were the tough guys, the others were in sick bay.

When they first started with regulating smoking in the workplace, the smoking room became the nerve centre of the organization, that's were all the smart dudes were, you could organize priority on your batch runs in the smoking room.

By the turn of the century the character of the smoking area's in most organization had changed, it was mostly mail clerks, building security staff, and the odd cool dude who had forgotten to put his/her nicotine patch on that morning. It made me question why do I smoke. Does it make me cool? Do I really care what other people think of me.

After doing a lot of research I couldn't find one positive application for nicotine save that it kills insects. So why would I want to spend most of my waking life killing myself slowly with an insecticide? Simple I was a complete addict.

Nicotine rates up there with heroine and coke as being one of the most addictive substances known to man. Now add to that that the tobacco companies have spent decades and billions of dollars on research and development not to make cigarettes more healthy but more poisonous and addictive. So who is the cool dude now? The nerd that never smoked or the zombie who wastes their GAS money, to inhale a substance that will eventually kill you just so you can make some unscrupulous American fat cats richer.

I gave up cigarettes in 2001 and will never smoke a cigarette again. Cannabis on the other hand is not physiologically addictive, it's consumption is 10 time less likely to cause heart or lung disease and it in addition to being a mild anti depressant it reduces nausea related to chemotherapy and can treat glaucoma. Yet it was declared an illegal substance in the the US in 1938 on the recommendations of a subcommittee who's members who had vested interests in alcohol and tobacco companies, do the maths, the world has some powerfully evil MF's

j/k. I agree with everything you're saying. Smoking's faded from our culture in such a way that it's seen as ok to not smoke. (Where did we go wrong in the first place. Damn you, Hollywood) It's become a dirty habit that people just don't find awesome anymore. (well, that's the vibe i'm getting down here.. other cities could be different) All that anti-smoking action has paid off.
Still, you can't lie, you can look damn awesome with a cigarette ?

Yeah by other smokers, trouble is all the sweet smelling bootie don't smoke cigarettes. BTW I have met quite a few 40+ year old virgins that smoke (of all 4 sexes)

What I did to reprogram my Hollywood hypnotised image is ...
1. Make a list of all the people you admired and respected throughout history and divide them into smokers and non smokers. My non-smoking idols list is far longer,
2. Every time you see someone that you really disrespect that smokes like your boss or Hitler or a crack head - take a mental picture not all smokers look like James Dean or Marlin Brando. 8)

Quit seven years ago, and never cheated since. Still crave it every now and then .... :-[

Just out of curiosity...you guys who smoked and gave it up: How? Cold turkey, patches, gum, hipnosis or what?

I've "quit" a number of times in the past, for periods of up to six months. What got me smoking again each time was a damned cigar.... One cigar with a few drinks, a few days later I go buy a cigar, then another, eventually it's a cigar every evening, then back to cigarettes again.

Bloody malignant drug from hell, nicotine is... and I should be the last one to smoke!

I used a nicotine spray for for 10 weeks. At first you are getting your full nicotine fix ever time you take a puff. It breaks the the whole ritual that lighting up and everything. Each set of sprays has less nicotine so eventually in the last few weeks you just inhaling peppermint.

I also loved cigars so I bought a fat Cuban to celebrate my one year anniversary. After a couple of puffs I started feeling a bit nauseous so I let my 2 brother finish it (also ex-smokers).

I quit for about 4 years.. and then moving to JoBurg was the last straw.. Back to smoking, cause other wise I might kill a producer or two!!

mmm... might convince myself to stop again at some stage.

Like Rene, also the spray. I used Quit 1-2-3. Physical addiction is gone within about two weeks (dry mouth, irritation, etc), but thereafter its the mental addicition you fight like any other addict! Every time I did something I used to associate with smoking (drink a nice glass of red, have a good meal, etc) the craving would return. Still happens now from time to time, after seven years!! Especially if I'm playing a gig, I feel like a smoke after about six songs (based on my previous mental programming).

Also picked up about 10kgs after quitting!!

I have been smoking for about a year now. And I still enjoy that first cig after you wake up. Espesially after you do your "dirty little deed with the nabours daughter! lol". I dont plan on living till I'm 100 and I only get one life. So I might as well smoke. Dont really drink though

Anyone wanting to experience the true joys of smoking (and the ensuing joys of emphysema) can come visit my bed-ridden father and his oxygen machine any time - can't stand it, don't enjoy it, and I agree on it being wasted GAS money !

+1 to Rene - you make the effort NOT to smoke and between the lovely clean air and other people's 2nd hand smoke your lungs take a skop anyway ! >☹
