Help with latency

Hi there

I record through my Roland Juno-Gi's Interface, which doesn't do too bad for my needs atm.

Here's the issue, when recording a vocalist for example with a guitar track: I laid down the guitar track already and it's nessesary for the vocalist to hear it. No I can easily plug the headphones into the Juno itself for direct monitoring, but then the vocalist can only hear her own voice and not the recorded guitar track as well.

How does one go to fix this?

I've tried monitoring through Reaper itself but there occurs a rather large latency.

Firstly try and get your latency down to sub 10ms - more than that and it becomes unusable IMO. Otherwise you can use a mixer to mix the zero latency vocal with the computer's output (and make sure input monitoring is off in Reaper).

128 samples (or lower) should be your aim, 256 should still be ok but it get's noticeable even then.

In Reaper go to "options" - "preferences" - "Audio_device" and make sure the "Request Block Size" (buffer size) is set to as low as you can get your sound driver to go.

According to the Roland site the Juno gi has a 24bit 44.1khz interface so I'm guessing you should be able to get the buffer size quite low. Once you do that you should have no problem with real time monitoring in Reaper.

Ok I went to the Preferences.

The Buffers are currently at 8 x 1024

I'm not completely sure what that means. So should I change the 1024 to 128 so that it becomes 8 x 128? (latency becomes 23ms)

Forgive me, but I don't really know what I'm doing here.

Change the buffer size to 128, it should give you a latency of 2,9ms, 23ms you'll still notice a lag

If it's giving you the option of actual buffer amounts then drop that from 8 to as low you can before you start noticing drop outs and stuttering etc, although that seems strange, what drivers do you have for your sound?

Thanks for that, I had the WaveOut selected instead of ASIO Driver. ~~But now I'm not get any output. It's seems like I can only select to output back to the Juno, which is a problem - I can't hear the audio through my speakers/headphones connected to the pc.~~

I got it, I forgot to plug the headphones into the Juno itself ?
