I have R5k to spend, and don't know what guitar to pick.
I play indie rock(Kings of leon, the kooks, Dirty skirts, Van coke kartel, Die helde ens.), and blues. I use a Vox 50watt amp.
I have looked at the Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster SSH wich cost R 4999 but I heard the Fender standaar tele is R7k is, there so big diffrence between the quality as the price gap?
I was also looking at epiphone sg-400, but I love the Fender Look and feel.

They are actually quite different animals. The Standard Fender is a better build and material quality, but the VM Squier has a wider and less common range of sounds with a Tele bridge pickup, a Strat middle and a mini humbucker neck. Personally I'd go for the Fender, but the best thing for you to do is try both and decide which you like better.
As far as the prices go - those are the retails you gave, and it's easy to push a salesman to discount down from that - the standard shouldn't end up too far above your budget of R5K

The Tele will definately NAIL the musical influences listed there :
Infact its seldom you find an Indie band that doesnt have a Tele in their arsenal....
Try and stay clear of the the Squier though

All has been said. I would also favour the Standard and try to get the price down.

I'll go against the grain here and say I think the Squier Vintage Modified series are better guitars, IMO, than Fender Standard (Mexican) series guitars. Vintage Modified are definitely higher quality than the normal Squier Affinity and Squier Standard series guitars. Why?
The electronics are better: Pickups are Duncan Designed vs generic Fender and the finish and build quality is nearly as good (in some cases as good) for much less. Also doing things like changing machine heads, fitting Graphtec saddles and nut + a good setup to the Squier will still come in under the price of a Fender Standard series. Much better value and at the same price or less (with all the mods) you'll have a better guitar. Plus from what I've seen the Fender Standard series have gone up in price (the two stores I've been to here in JHB in the past few weeks have them at R8000+).
Also check out the Squier Vintage Modified Tele SH and the Tele Custom II (one of my favourites - I've come so close to buying one many a time). Specifically for what you're playing the VM Tele SSH would be a great guitar and more versatile than a Mex Standard Tele.
That's my $0.02 ?

i wouldn't recommend an Epiphone for what you want to play....
I'd go for the Tele over the Strat because well (IMO) Teles play, look, fell and sound MUCH better than a Strat...
what are those really big annoying guitars that Indie bands play with?those HUGE ones?i played one before and they are SHIT!!!!!

I have to second what you say Mr. M, i fully agree with you. My good friend recenty purchased a Squier Vintage Modified Thinline Tele, with the duncan designed pickups. I have to say that the build quality is superior to that of a Fender standard model, and the sound is simply amazing for the price (check out the pic below). If I were you I would go for the vintage modified squier :-).

I never liked the look of the Tele back in the day, so with my budget constrains, I bought a Squier Std Strat. Selected it out of several models they had there at the time.
I've picked up MIJ and MIM strats that don't feel half as good and as well dressed as mine. Granted the electronics are maybe a little suspect but the Vintage Mod series sounds like it's got that sorted to a point.
That said, I really like the feel of my Epi Special too - only an ESP Eclipse (?) has come close.

I have a Squier Standard series Tele, and I can find no fault with it, I am getting quite attached to her.

thanks guys. . . how are the vintage modified, The have the look of the Fender '72 Tele Deluxe, I don't know how they sound but they look cool and are R2995 and R3195

may be of no importance to the buyer but if you wanted to sell it later, would the fact that it says squier and not normal fender drop the price? whereas the normal fender will hold some of its value?
