Hi guys I see there's a special on vintage guitars for us forumites this month. I've been looking for a les paul type guitar, but don't know if these are an...

If you're gonna be spending that much get the real thing. A Gibson LP Studio faded is around R9k now.

Anyway,back to the vintage; The specs say:

Body: Mahogany
Top:
Solid Carved Mahogany (GT/ WR/ TSB/ BB/ AW)
Flame Maple Veneer (HB/ CS/ IT)
Neck: Mahogany – Set Neck

I see Gibson now have a mahogany topped les paul out too.

These discussions always come down to the same points, don't merely go by someone else's opinion, go play the guitar and see if you like it or not.

My personal preference is for a maple neck and rosewood fingerboards. Others differ.

That again depends on whether he wants the looks and construction of the original '50s LPs or prefers the much altered construction and looks that you get with a Studio. Kinda like: do you want to have a Les Paul like Jimmy Page, or is it more important to have one with "Gibson" on it - or do you just like how the LP Studio is made. Totally depends on your outlook. To me an LP Studio is nothing like the real thing: i.e., a Les Paul made between 1954 and 1961. A Tokai is very much like those LPs.

My guess is that you sanded through the veneer, thinking that it was paint.

Nope. Those flames came off as soon as the paper touched the guitar

That sounds like it could have been a photo-finish to me, where they print the flame maple look onto the body...

Sharonzaz what site are you looking at? Are you even looking at the same guitar?

I copied and pasted the specs and even made the part bold. They say veneer. veneer

Aren't maple veneers REALLY thin? If you hit it with sandpaper I'm sure you wil go right through it. Makes more sense than a painted maple top? Besides you're pretty special if you can paint mahogany to look like maple.

We were definitely looking at different guitars.
But some of the Icon's on the site say different things;

Body: Mahogany
Neck: Mahogany – Set Neck

Nothing about the top there.

Which is on the distressed models. Which was yours?

Also I don't think the original guitar in question by the OP (ie the one on special) is an Icon series. I could be wrong.

Now, after sending me to that site and only having GAS for an amp, i now want this...

OK, it is only NOW that I saw the thread on the Vintage specials and
at these prices I have to say there is just no comparison! and I wouldnt think twice
and get (even two ?) Vintage guitars right away! ?

They've even been tempting me - and I know I just don't get along with Les Paul type guitars. But at the price it's almost worth it just to have an LP around the house.
