The Clash

Squonk

Been listening to The Clash today, and am pondering the Genius of Joe Strummer and Mick Jones.

I was a teenager when The Sex Pistols and The Damned started the whole UK Punk movement, but I was more drawn to The Clash and later The Stranglers.

The Clash just had so much more to their music, a bit of Ska, Reggae, Dub and Rock and Roll, and the vocals of Joe Strummer , such a trademark voice that was angry and singing about relevant issues that were facing the UK at the time.

Police and Thieves playing in the background.

Rock the Casbah playing now. My feet are moving...... :yup:

Seems like they are a forgotten Band that inspired many....

Far from forgotten - London Calling and Rock The Casbah both still get a lot of airplay and they are widely acknowledged as one of the three originators of punk.

The Clash were real musicians playing punk. I never had any time for The Pistols or The Ramones, but loved The Clash, The Stranglers, Siouxie Sioux and The Damned. And of course, I love the "clever punks" like Joe Jackson (arguably early new wave, but his early stuff had definite elements of punk to it (probably by design)... mixed with all kinds of other stuff, from pop to jazz) and Elvis Costello.

Yeah, they always had a wider musical reference than most UK punk bands, though I think a lot of those guys knew more than they let on and kept it hid (see Paul Weller's later explorations of soul and folk-rock). Some of them could even play their instruments ?

London Calling is the one that I have.

A fine band, and, I think, slipping out of the mass memory these days.

Another "forgotten" band is The Jam, speaking of Paul Weller. I loved "In the City" their first album. It was recorded in 1 day and you can hear the roughness and anger in it. "Setting Sons" which came a few years later was, for me, their best album. Never got into the Clash though. I think Barney Simon killed "Should I stay..." by playing it constantly.

The Jam was good stuff as well, Should have mentioned this in my first post.
I like the anger and the roughness as well. Paul Weller doesn't get enough credit!
