So if you could choose any studio in SA to record at, who would you chose and why?

Well in the western cape area, i would choose:

Sunset recording studios, good reputation and right next to TL mastering that also has a good reputation.
Bellville studios, what more can i say, theo crous runs it.
Rockitdog studios, also has a good reputation.

Shifty - for it's history. Also because they're unlikely to start making production decisions on the basis of appeal to some market segment or other.

Assuming of course that
a) Shifty still operates it's own studio
b) I would have something that is worth recording ?

I agree about Sunset. Can't beat the experience, but he's expensive. Just about every local band has had their stint there.
Also in the Western Cape:
Paris Studios in Vishoek. Paris is a really laid-back guy and let's you explore your own sound. And the view is amazing! Not too expensive, as these things go.
If you're looking for cheap and need someone to help you a lot, even play with you and arrange your songs at no big extra cost, Fat Cat Studios in Grabouw is worth a look. Its a one-man show. Robert Mitchley, owner, is an amazing all-round muso and very focussed.
Also: I think it depends on the sound you want. Every studio is different, depending on the owner/engineer's own musical tastes. Eg. for a harder edged sound, Theo C would be a better option than most.

Bob: Shifty (in other words LLoyd Ross) operates with a friend these days, as Stoep Studios in Parktown, Jhb. Everything sounds very organic, but unfortunately you might walk out with a different sound than the one you had in you head. Production decisions are made differently now, but I have to add, Lloydd isn't very involved any more.

DA Studio in fourways , run by dave abbot , he really knows his stuff and is not all the expensive either

almost forgot Legends studios in fourways , they do awesome work , and have had some very good bans come out of there studios

[/quote] We have recorded there, really enjoyed it, Paris is a great guy and helped us a lot! Just interested to find out what else is out there as his studio is the only one that I have been priveledged enough to spend some time in. (check out the view!)

It really depends on the style of music you're playing too.

I'm not trying to steal business or be arrogant at all, but most studio's and engineers in CT have no clue how to handle heavier music. In the past year I've not received one bad comment or unhappy client ?

I've been to and heard about a few studio's/engineers so I won't bad mouth anyone but If I did had to choose other studio's besides mine (for the softer and heavier stuff) I'd go with Theo's Bellville Studio's. You have to either be on a label or have BEEEG bucks to record there though. Or B# in JHB which isn't really CT but the only other studio I'd trust to send my stuff too.

If I were State President I'd give Lloyd Ross a medal for contributions to culture. The man should be a legend - but like many that he recorded he has received little public acclaim. Well... other than being the guy who wrote the theme tune for Vyfster.

Stoep Studios is, IIRC, Dan Robert's studios. Dan is the mastermind behind Radio Kalahari Orkes (and is also a Smoothtalker player ?
