Couldn't disagree with you more! Some of Vai's, Satch's and Timmon's tunes nearly make me want to cry sometimes. Their ballads are amazing and their rock is way funkier than what's on the radio.

I like honesty and feel,thats why i appreciate Daron malakian,a far less experienced guitarist,but his music means alot to me..System of a Down was the soundtrack for me growing up..
But I'm getting sidetracked now so I'll just keep quiet..

But emotion is subjective you see. What Vai does might resonate with someone else because they have a different personality from you.

Used to be heavily into Vai, but came to the conclusion that he likes to spoil a song. The songs posted here originally are 100%, but then others will start out just as cool and pleasant to the ear, and then all of a sudden it's a cacophony of squealing guitars. Make no mistake, the man is a god, but really....

...which goes to show he knows what his audience wants. Every time he tries to take a more song oriented direction (Sex and Religion, et. al.) he gets thoroughly slated. His audience is a bunch of shred loving guitarists. Personally I preferred the rawness of the earlier stuff and the songs which would sometimes not even have a solo or just a single, well-placed one.

Has anyone here seen the Steve Vai Live at the Astoria DVD from 2001?
Recently discovered it and think its pretty darn good.
He seems like a strange guy ? but he can really put on a show.
Tony MacAlpine is really amazing on that DVD as well.
Any other thoughts on the DVD?

I thouroughly enjoyed it and still watch it fairly often. Billy was also well on form. Bangkok is my favourite track on the DVD. I didn't like Tony or Jeff's guitar tones though.

Vai is a great showman, but maybe a little too much of the "fan blowing the hair back" thing under the pretence of keeping cool. There are also a few too many places where he's faking getting feedback from the amp, when it's actually the sustainer.

? Well spotted Alan. Vai seems to do a lot of the "hair blown back by fan" thing and morphy dancing in front of the amp...lol

Yeah, Bangkok is an amazing song on the DVD.. the fan blowing the hair back is really funny.
and definately have to agree with Virgil Donati and Billy Sheehan being amazing.
Quite a band filled with extraordinary musicians. Wouldnt mind stealing all their skill ?
could have a super one man band ?

I've had that DVD for a little over 2 years I think. MY favourite PERFORMANCE (not song) on the dvd is BAd Horsie. Man it is SO sick! Lasers , headgear with lights, the whole works! Virgil Donati's drum solo is beyond words, and as always, Steve gets the best of the best to play for/with him whenever he wishes! I would have to say he has earned it. AS for Alan's mentioning the sustainer, I tried to get one, and there are NONE in SA (far as I'm told), except the ones that come on some Fernandes guitars. I know Fernandes invented the sustainer, but apparently the best one is the Sustainiac Sustainer. Anybody ever messed around with 1?
