Oh I almost forget, those of you who are Vai or Satch fans should listen to old Alice Cooper tracks. Most of the guitar on those songs are one of the 2.
Slash and Satch play together on Hey Stoopid (Pretty rare) and what's more, Satch is the one playing Rhythym while Slash does the intro and main solo. Satch performs the outro tho ?

No one mentioned 'Tender Surrender'...what he does in that song is insane...

Stevies Spanking from the CD
Them or Us (where Vai Trades off with Dweezil Zappa). There's a few live clips of it, most commonly from the Halloween concert in New York 1981. Vai is wearing a leopard print top and long black trousers. There's another version of it from Rome on July 10 1982, where he wears the same top, but is wearing a very short pair of white shorts.

yea.. now i remember
I also seem to recall him playing a Fender ? / or fender style guitar

His "Sticker" Strat - with a DiMarzio X2N pickup. He used that and Carvin amps in the early days.

For the love of God and the audence is listening..
However i stick to my opinion that these guys have too much technique but their music makes u feel nothing..
I'd rather make honest music that affects people, makes them feel something..these guys have great technique, but i can hardly ever listen to one whole song...
I like honesty and feel, thats why i appreciate Daron malakian,a far less experienced guitarist, but his music means alot to me..System of a Down was the soundtrack for me growing up..
But I'm getting sidetracked now so I'll just keep quiet..

Couldn't disagree with you more! Some of Vai's, Satch's and Timmon's tunes nearly make me want to cry sometimes. Their ballads are amazing and their rock is way funkier than what's on the radio.

But emotion is subjective you see. What Vai does might resonate with someone else because they have a different personality from you.

Used to be heavily into Vai, but came to the conclusion that he likes to spoil a song. The songs posted here originally are 100%, but then others will start out just as cool and pleasant to the ear, and then all of a sudden it's a cacophony of squealing guitars. Make no mistake, the man is a god, but really....

...which goes to show he knows what his audience wants. Every time he tries to take a more song oriented direction (Sex and Religion, et. al.) he gets thoroughly slated. His audience is a bunch of shred loving guitarists. Personally I preferred the rawness of the earlier stuff and the songs which would sometimes not even have a solo or just a single, well-placed one.

Has anyone here seen the Steve Vai Live at the Astoria DVD from 2001?
Recently discovered it and think its pretty darn good.
He seems like a strange guy ? but he can really put on a show.
Tony MacAlpine is really amazing on that DVD as well.
Any other thoughts on the DVD?
arjunmenon
Along with Tony MacAlpine, i thought Virgil Donati was awesome
AlanRatcliffe
I thouroughly enjoyed it and still watch it fairly often. Billy was also well on form. Bangkok is my favourite track on the DVD. I didn't like Tony or Jeff's guitar tones though.
Vai is a great showman, but maybe a little too much of the "fan blowing the hair back" thing under the pretence of keeping cool. There are also a few too many places where he's faking getting feedback from the amp, when it's actually the sustainer.
arjunmenon
? Well spotted Alan. Vai seems to do a lot of the "hair blown back by fan" thing and morphy dancing in front of the amp...lol
dyllels
Yeah, Bangkok is an amazing song on the DVD.. the fan blowing the hair back is really funny.
and definately have to agree with Virgil Donati and Billy Sheehan being amazing.
Quite a band filled with extraordinary musicians. Wouldnt mind stealing all their skill ?
could have a super one man band ?
