Okay, I've been building amps for years now, it was only a matter of time before I incorporated some pedals too. So I've been building a few single opamp clippers. No probs so far.
So I figured I also need some simple single knob boosts to compliment the line-up. Went with a SHO type.......hisssssss, but great tone besides that. So I think maybe a bad transistor. So I do a orman mosfet boost...very similar and regarded as a clearer boost. Hissssss again. Very disappointing.
What the hell is it? I have an imported godlyke 9v supply. Works fine with everything else, could the bs170 mosfets not like this supply?
Oh and I've tryed a smoothing cap before a 100ohm resister for filtering. Its not hum, its a hiss.

Twas the power supply.... Guess these little guys don't like it. Battery was the solution to nice quiet boost.

Yeah, those transistors hate noise in the supply.

Yeah. Really disappointed with my power supply...... And it not a shelf cheapie.

build one ? the 7809 reg is your best friend. diode bridge, adequate resistor + 2000uf filter, 100uf cap after the reg and you're away.
