It certainly goes on. A classic example would be KT Tunstall who used a looper in her breakthough performance on Jools Holland's show. I've seen several artists use them locally. One example I remember well is Guy Buttery.
I don't think you can do it too much in a show though, build a whole show around it. I think it gets a bit wearying for the audience to watch the performer build a song up layer by layer uh-gain. It's a gimmick you can use only so many times in one set.
I've seen Josh Grieson use a looper to record a verse of a song so that he can put the guitar down with the loop playing and act out the last verse.
