Firstly......I am no dyed in the wool Clappie fan okay. That said, who is this Sven Larsen dude when he's at home, and what is this inference that he plays better than Clapton? Was that just friendly BS over a few dops?
Because if I Google Clapton, the search result pages go on and on for days. because he is an international super star and has been since the 60's.
This Sven Larsen, I can hardly find a thing on him. I cannot even find any of his music to listen to. Nothing. Can anyone point me to mp3's or whatever, albums he played on, iTunes perhaps? Oh hold on, there is a Sven Larsen in the Cape..... nah, he plays a camera. Oh, wait.... if I Google Sven Larsen
Guitar...... there I get one or two suggestions.....says he is a composer. Hmmm. Never heard of him.
But he is suggesting he showed Clapton up by burning up a single solo?
Eric Clapton will be the first to say he is not especially an excellent guitarist in the sense of technique etc. That he does what
he does well and is not a superchops type technical player. Anyone with
half a brain knows that. There are millions of guitarists around the world that might have a wider range of ability. Play faster, know more scales, able to cover more styles.....etc etc. But who cares about that? So what if you are the fastest player on the planet. That and a nickel will get you a hot cup of jack squat. It means nothing. Guitar players are a dime a dozen.
Eric Clapton is a household name, an international superstar. As a guitarist, songwriter, singer, performer etc etc. Look at his career. Thinking about all that, what would prompt somebody to try embarrass him on his own stage after being given the honor of being asked up?
And
singemonkey....what exactly do you mean by
singemonkey wrote:....his reputation as a human being has been shot long time ago?
Huh? Can you elaborate, please do bro'?
Getting back to SL...... maybe Mr Larsen missed the whole point of what Clapton said, missed the humor in it, missed the compliment? Maybe the crowd going bossies for the local homeboy doing good went to his head? I dunno. But remember, it was Clapton invited him up and GAVE Larsen the opportunity to do good in front of his homies, the absolute honor of being asked up with someone of Claptons stature. That alone is in such good faith. How cool is that? But to put a spin on it?
If Eric came up to me after I just burned on a solo, and said in his dry humor "Do me a favor and please don't take a solo in the next one alright!".......... I would take that as "
you did good man. Nail the next one also!!!" To me that is a compliment in muzo humor. And I would never have walked off....like Larsen did?
No way!!!!! That is so unbelievably weak!!
If Eric Clapton called me up for two I would play two. I would be watching him like a hawk to see if he would let me go off with a solo the 2nd time. At no time would I try upstage him....not with stage moves, not with guitar gymnastics and not with a cheap shot like trying to do something on guitar that he obviously couldn't do, like shredding or just playing real fast etc... trying to show him up.....even if I could. I would treat the honor of being invited to play, with the UTMOST professionalism and I would play guitar as well as I could in a somewhat subdued manner, letting the star of the show shine. I would wait for the nod before I solo'd and I would know my place. A small fry unknown SA guitar player on stage with an international superstar..........and I would never forget that my being there in the first place, was by way of that international superstar
giving me the chance to play with him and look good to all my fellow South African's at the show. That is such an honor!
You have to have respect for those who paved the way before you. Just because you are a hot shot player in some virtually unknown SA band by the rest of the world's standards, does not give you the right to try upstage a performer like Clapton on his own stage. That is plain disrespectful. Someone who has had more experience, than the rest of us
combined will EVER be able to gain in our own lifetimes It just can't be done.
Maybe it never went down like that and the story has morphed into something else?
It is actually hilarious. Even more hilarious is people who just go off about how kak a player Clapton is, or the attitude like "I can take him" ........yeah, okay...sure....mhmmm!
