Saw Sting last night

Reinhard

What a show. I am always impressed when an artist reproduces his album vocals live.
Quite a few songs I did not know, he seemed to shy away from most of the police stuff, only doing every breath you take. He did however do all his own hits. The band is super tight. His lead guitarist's (mostly played a tele and a vintage SB strat) son is also in Sting's band now. Sting played bass most of the night (back to Bass tour after all), alternating between a 53 and 57 Fender bass. He played guitar on one song, I think it may have been Fragile. Being the last show of the tour, they came back on stage probably 4 times.

Biggest surprise was hearing Sting do "Hung my head", I'm only familiar with the Johnny Cash cover, had no idea sting wrote it.

Great show ?

Awesome Reinhard! How's that tone Dominic Miller gets' out of the Mesa LoneStar with the Tele and Strat? ?

The Jo'burg set list had several Police-era numbers. Not the obvious ones though.

Dunno how many here can remember, but I saw him at Ellis Park years ago. Think it was called Concert in the Park or something. He was friggin awesome. Weird thing was Midnight Oil played the last gig of the show, or just after Sting, so he must have opened for them. ? Hearing a didgeridoo being played in Ellis park gave me goosebumps. Unforgettable experience.

He gets some sweet clear bell like tones, and obviously your typical tele tones.

That could well be. Would have loved to hear Roxanne, Da Da Da etc.

Was there... 5fm birthday bash. Midnight Oil were headliners and Sting was surprise perfomer... he was great. The Oilers kicked ass though!

Didn't he sing Roxanne? It was one of his best songs at the Jo'burg show. I'd be very curious to know how his CT set differed from the Jhb set.

Thanks GaryMac

Where are you getting these set lists? Is there a website somewhere that records it? I'm guessing you didn't attend all four shows with a notebook and pencil ?

I feel cheated. The 'tonians got one more song than us vaalies. ☹

Reinhard

Last night he may have mixed it up more as it was the last show. I'm pretty sure he didn't do Roxanne.
Either way, very enjoyable show. Seems the old chaps know how to put up a good show. Billy Joel a few years back put on a fantastic show as well.

Now whats the chances of the Eagles at Soccer City, or whatever its called this week, being as good as Sting???

Slim ?

I'm sure the Eagles will be good but I think the Sting act is a hard one to follow. At least, I think the two will be very different so there won't really be a side-by-side comparison between them. You're always going to struggle to compare an indoor venue show to a stadium show.

Riaan

It was a great show, phenomenal band, particularly the drummer. Never seen anyone drumming like that, and Sting's music is not exactly easy...complex rythms, he's just not a 4/4 kind of guy!

I think the Eagles will be a different type of show, one probably can't compare the two. Though it would have been nice if they played at the Grand West also instead of the stadium, for the sake of acoustics.
