Studio Monitors - On a budget?

Just to revive this again. I've been away from my desk at home for a while. I just cranked up my monitors (M-Audio BX5) again, and I swear they are just flipping awesome.

Now that I've got used to them and I don't pump the bass too low I am getting such amazing reference when I play/record. I love it.

Did you get a set of monitors yet?

If not, I can recommend a set of Kurzweil KS-40A monitors. My favourite tight budget self-powered monitors. Got a set a few months ago for just under a grand... Doubt if you'll find anything that sounds as good for close to that price... Relatively inexpensive investment that should fill the slot nicely 'till you're willing and able to fork out for them Genelec's... ? ?

Appreciate it. There used to be a music shop in Durbanville, with a recording studio. I thought it closed down though?

Here's another one sided opinion (the only kind I know). Every studio I've walked into that have Yamies, the sound is consistent, no mater if they're 6 months old or 5 years old. Same goes for Genelec.

Us poor working class musos cant afford Focal, or B&W, Ruark, Genelec, food, etc... Hence the topic was budget monitors?

I used to. Got rid of them in favour of the Yammies. I got both the HS50s and the HS80's for the price of the VXT 8's!

Hey Mo didnt you used to run the mackies HR824? we got the MKII here at Emendy and i really dig them...

Yup, worked on them for years. Good speakers. Although the MK I's are better than the MKII's, in my opinion.

hells yeah... they cost a fair penny, but they are quite special to listen to!
What I like about them is that they are "brutally honest" but at the same time sound amazing and are really nice to just listen to music on ( not mp3's tho!! - gosh they sound horrible on the monitors)

So I ignored all the good advice everyone gave and got me a set of Alesis M1 Active 620's mostly as they were what was available, within budget and they have a 6" driver. So far so good ?
