My Peavey has an effects loop, which I don't fully understand. I understand that most people run their effects pedals in the effects loop (hence the name ? ), rather than Guitar -> Effects -> Amp, but I also know people that prefer to have Wah pedals and the like in the latter format. What I mainly want to know is whether the effects that are run through the effects loop are processed before or after the on-board distortion/drive of the amp. For example, if I use the wah on my Digitech RP90 multi-fx pedal (in FX loop), in conjunction with the amp's distortion, is the clean sound being processed through the wah first, or is the distorted sound being sent through?

The effects loop sits between the preamp and power stages (after the amps distortion channel, but before it comes out the speaker). Distortion/overdrive effects don't sound natural when they are placed in the effects loop as they are designed by be placed in front of the preamp stage. Place your overdrive, distortion, wah, and filter effects before the amp, and your modulations, delays, and reverbs in the effects loop.
There are no rules though. You can run delays up front into a dirty amp, it will just distort the delays. Whatever sound you like.

Thanks man, that makes a lot of sense now. I had no clue what was going on...
I'm not much of an effects person myself, but I do occasionally want a bit of wah or flange on top of my amp's distortion. This will help loads :yup:

No problem. Just remember, time-based effects go in the loop ?
I don't have an effects loop on my amp, but run it cleanish and have no problem with everything up front. It all depends whether you are getting your overdrive/distortion from the amp or from pedals.
