I sat at TOMS and compared monitors. These Mackies are amazing for the price.

Never heard them (I have genelecs ?) but they seem to get good reviews, preferable/comparable to/over the Yamaha HS50's which are about R500 more per speaker, seems like a pretty good deal to me.

You should. While I haven't tried them, I've been hearing good things about those and the reviews so far are good. Tannoy Reveals are another decent option in that range, but something tells me the Mackies might be a better bet (probably the memory of some of the bigger Mackie monitors, which are awesome).

I just found out that price on Musicmadness is for one speaker, not for a pair.

WhyTF would they sell them individually? I'm actually very annoyed now.

They usually sell them separate as there's no "left" and "right" speaker, each speaker should be the same, with it's own power supply and switch, own volume and inputs.
If you wanted those specific speakers for your surround sound mixing then you could buy 5 speakers, instead of 3 sets and throw one away, if you just needed to replace one you would just buy 1 etc.

Price per speaker is standard with the more pro monitors for the reasons Majestik has outlined, but most stores take pains to mark those models clearly.

RP5's are good for the price...

From a small speaker like that with a 5" driver it's not going to go that low, 60hz if you're lucky, I actually prefer it like that, makes you work harder for a huge tight low end and, USUALLY, when you play a mix back on a bigger system it sounds gargantuan.....in a good way.

Just check the low end with good head phones if you got.

Well, 5" will always be a little shy in the bass extension department. The KRK Rokits are better than most, IMO.

Which is a pity, for my budget getting 8" is a stretch. The Mackie's certainly had a range I liked. and 60Hz is good enough for my ears.

I have a friend who swears by the Behringer truths. But he's had to add a sub for the low end. so I'm not so keen. More speakers equals more money...

The low-end on the Mackie's is hyped up. I wouldn't go there, it's not an accurate representation of the lows. In the range of affordable 5" monitors I would go for the JBL LSR 2325's, or the Tannoy Reveal 501a's. The Behringer Truth's are also pretty dang good for the price. I find the KRK Rokit's to have a flubby low end response. I had the RP6's and now have the V6's - the difference is huge.

I've heard the Mackies and I'm personally stoked with them.
Its difficult to compare the top brands cos there is no one store to compare them. Pity...

Each as it turns out.

The one problem is the price puts them almost in Adam A5 territory - which are awesome small nearfields.

I can second the Tannoys (don't know the JBLs).

I had the RP6's and now have the V6's - the difference is huge.

I went straight from Alesis Monitor 1s (which I've kept, BTW - still great speakers with the right amp) to V8s. A/Bing the RP8s against the V8s, the V8s were the clear winners.
