Just saw one about a Metal band in Baghdad Iraq. The band is called Crasicauda. { the latin name for a scorpion that occurs in the area } Jamming to the background sounds of mortars and gunfire, eventually the practice space gets bombed destroying their equipment, yet they persevere.

I really enjoyed the story of megadeth. In a way dave had such a hard and sad life. I trully think he was really unhappy living in metallicas shadow and how people treated him bec he was kicked out of the band.
Yes he was out of control but still he had come from such an abusive background.

A great documentary and great insight into The Who, good stuff!Alan Ratcliffe wrote: The Kids are Alright (The Who)
Let It Be must go down as a documentary, a great behind the scenes look at a band that was disintegrating.
All the shots with Yoko everywhere bugging the hell out of Paul.
Also remember a scene where George and Paul have a bit of scrap
Martin Scorsese's Dylan bio - No Direction Home.
And maybe not really or exclusively documentary, but Elvis Costello's spectacle series is not straight performance either. Kind of a chat show for musicians with a musician as host. There is, for example, a marvellous interview with Elton John who talks about his early days in the industry and his inspirations on his songs and playing. Also a great interview with somebody better known for his non-musical career - Bill Clinton. Those are on the series 1 set which has dodgy sound for the interviews.
Series 2 tilts the play/talk balance more towards play, but Elvis changes chairs for one episode with Mary Louise Parker playing interviewer.
Also good interviews (over the two series) with, amongst others, Springsteen, Bono, Tony Bennet, Stewart Copeland and Herbie Hancock.

Yesspeak - Documentary on YES during their 35th Anniversary tour
Brilliant behind the scenes look at Yes. Rick Wakeman is quite a chracter, during a rather long Chris Squire Bass Solo, you can see Rick sit at a table all decorated like a picnic table drinking a cup of tea!
Really get to see how good Chris Squire and Alan white are as a rhythm section.
Steve Howe looks about 102, plays some interesting guitars.

There is a doccie on the making of the Metallica Black album. Definitely worth a watch, just for the production techiniques alone.
I have the Hendrix - Live at Monterey which has a short documentary attached as well.

- You See Me Laughin' (2002) - about the last great North Mississippi bluesmen and label Fat Possum Records (label that Black Keys started out on) that struggles to record them featuring, R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough (Black Keys covered some of his songs) - A must see

+1 on PJ20 and No Direction Home.
25X5 The Continuing Adventures of The Rolling Stones is the best music documentary I've ever seen... only released on VHS. Grab hold of acopy if you can.
Also:
Jimi Hendrix (Warner Brothers)
Standing in the Shadows of Motown

Love that Motown one! A real eye-opener and includes some great tunes at the end - by the guys who created soul music, but with a new, younger generation doing vocal duties.Jack Flash Jr wrote: +1 on PJ20 and No Direction Home.

1. Looking for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus
A doccie with alt country deviant Jim White as narrator. He borrows a car and travels back south, to the swamps where he grew up. It's a amazing musical journey, featuring performances by amongst others The Handsome Family and Johnny Dowd. But above all, it gives you an indication of what it's like to be a white American living on the breadline as he visits churches, jails, a trailer park and a coal mine. Basically, you have a "choice between meth and Jesus". Fortunately, there is a third, tiny grouping of people - the artists, muso's and writers, of which White is a member, of course. Great footage, great scenery, great music. It changed the way I view doccies...
2. It Might Get Loud (of course)
Thank goodness for 5.1 sound...
3. The Last Waltz, Director's Cut
Apart from the good music, the new edit gives you an idea of Martin Scorsese's work ethic and how he does things. If you ever want to video record a live gig, this is the manual. (And you get to see Van Morrison in a silver jumpsuit! Haha!)
4. Standing in the Shadow of Motown
5. No Direction Home
Scorsese had the balls to keep it honest - and to prove that Dylan is a dick, but a genius nonetheless.
There are more on the shelf, but these are the top 5 in my book.
