for a while now i been considering putting together a special interest group of peeps interested in instrumental solo jazz guitar
let me clarify by by 'solo" jazz guitar i mean playing just one guitar unaccompanied not soloing in a jazz genre ...... like joe pass/martin taylor ect
i doubt many takers are out there , but it's worth the 5 min to type up a post just in case.........
i would see this like a book club ..... ? where interested parties could hook up and meet once a month or so and discuss solo jazz guitar and anything related like jazz guitars/ amps suited to jazz tone/ strings ... new jazz artists discovered, great solo jazz guitar cd's ect ........
and kinda even be like a study group ...... cos jazz is the one genre where exact copies of the original are NOT respected......... so if i play a version of "autumn leaves," and 3 others in the group do too ....most likely all 4 versions would have different takes on the same theme and reharmonised differently ........ and like we all know one NEVER stops learning music , so i'm sure there's plenty to be learnt/taught by all present
to be honest if this happens i'm sure it will be for only a very small group ... so it can be hosted in a lounge ( i'm willing to host at my place) and any guitar playing will be way soft so no issues with neighbours
this is aimed at forming a specific splinter group of jazz musicians who are interested in the solo jazz(multi part on one guitar style ) and aimed specifically at jazz standards , so not aimed at the mainstream acoustic market but squarely at jazz, and also not aimed at the jazz fusion genre like larry carlton ect , so a very specific splinter group aimed at instrumental solo jazz guitar
so if anyones keen on playing and sharing their experiences on studying/performing this style of solo jazz guitar contact me, via pm .....
also this is aimed at people who would like to just listen to solo jazz guitar , so it's not only for players ....... cos if this takes off , i'm sure i could organise performances where people keen on listening to this genre could come along , so let me know and i'll keep a data base of peeps interested as audience members only
so basically it could develop into a collection of solo instrumental jazz guitar players who could say get together once a month for a meeting as just players to discuss music and share idea's techniques over a whiskey and then there can be separate performances arranged where the peeps keen on being listeners will be invited to share in the event.
so just the 1st baby step in forming a solo jazz guitarists group in jhb/pta area
if you still not sure of the style/genre i mean below is an indication of what i mean with a few video's
