Songwriting Competitions?

I know this belongs under general music but I still can't read any topics there (because it's blocked by the webmaster at my workplace's).

I'd appreciate some opinions about the big competitions (the first cones that come up if one google 'songwriting competition). Based on a quick overview, what would anyone of you think are the different pros and cons of each?

Has anyone had any experience with them?

It would be REALLY mean if a mod moves this to the general music so you don't get your answer....

Sometimes the T&C's of those competitions encroach on your rights to the song and royalty's. You have to read them very carefully cos there are clauses about free usage of the music and all you get is the measly prize money.

I reckon coming second or third in a competition like this, or idols or whatever, is better. You get some exposure, some contacts and not much obligation to a non-negotiable deal.

Personally I think most of the contests are money making scams. They charge rather hight fees to enter and I don't see them providing much value.
I'd say rather spend your resources on marketing your songs and trying to get artists to record them.

If its criticism or feedback you're after then perhaps try some of the many songwriting forums out there.

From people I've spoken to, I get the idea that most of those competitions are set up for commercial gain - and not that of the songwriter!

But if you're looking for feedback, etc to enhance yor craft, look to things like the annual Barleycorn Songwriting Competition - great environment to showcase, learn, make contacts, etc
