I just read a new member intoduction and it striked me again how possitive the feed-back on tjis forum generally is and I had to add my bit.
I rescently thought - what the heck, I am a pianist first of all (most of the time I feel like I can contribute little here and just learn, learn, learn); let's join a piano forum.

GOOD GRIEF

Most of what you get for topics round there is:

Who plays the fastest trills
Who plays the most difficult piece
Who was the greatest composer
Who is the greatest pianist
Who memorised the most music the quickest
Who got the biggest repertoire
Who is the bestest fan of the bestest musicians
Whose taste in music is more exalted
Who can be the nastiest to the most other people on the forum

They won't see a lot of me, that's for sure.

You guitar guys are the best...

(Not that I want to dis them too badly, but I just thought what's up!)

what can i say. since joining this forum i've learned one thing - the tolerance level for idiots and showoffs is low. but mostly they just get ignored. it's a very effective method of dealing with 'em. we is a community. a bunch of guys 'n gals who, for the most part, get along pretty well, share the love and the knowledge in equal measure (see what i did there? i made a music pun) and the odd friday funny, sometimes on a tuesday to break the monotony.

ah well, not everyone can be as cool as a guitarist. especially not drummers. blecch.

Ah, but what else are they going to talk about? As an instrument, the piano isn't conducive to mods or accessory purchases beyond a new piano stool. I'm also pretty sure that the majority of members don't have 5 (10, 15...) of the things at home either. ?

As far as classical music goes, I'm one of the stiff ones (for instance when it comes to those cross-over okes) but it's not something I care to discuss, but there is some sad truth in what you say, Alan (even if it made me smile).
I'm passionate about my instrument and its music but I can't even finance a single one of the kind of piano I would really like to own (nor probably would be able to, ever) leave alone 15! This is not the sad part though - it's just that these mostly youngish forumites have opinions of inverse size in proportion to the depth of their knowledge, whereas on this forum some folks seem to know stuff in such technical detail it sometimes astound me.

What? I can think about at least 2 mods to hotrod a piano - scalloped bracing and bone hammers...

How about a series of pickups - one under each piano string, going into a huge effects board, pre-amps and amps. And a very sophisticated switching system. Imagine this: " ok let's put 200 ms delay on all the C notes, a bit of flange on all the D's, chorus on E..."

Wonder what that would sound like... ?

For what it's worth, Esbjorn Svennson, my favourite pianist, used to run his piano through effects like flangers and he'd also use prepared pianos where they would lodge paper or chimes into the frame onto certain notes and he'd use them to play around with atmosphere. Primarily most of his tracks had a discernible main theme and then would branch off into extended improvisations based around these effects and moods, one of my favourite quotes from him is "It's just what we play—and we play how we feel". He's unfortunately no longer with us, but his music is still absolutely amazing ?

Piano's have too many strings to contend with. We even look at our resident 8-string enthusiast with sideways glances sometimes. 8)
