Holy Crap! Very early NAD!

I was surprised today by the delivery of my new amp way ahead of the expected schedule!!

Long story (somewhat) short(er), after looking around locally I couldn't find anything that I liked as much as the Egnater Tweaker... problem was that Egnater is not available locally and none of the online retailers are allowed to ship new models out of the US. During a bit of idle browsing earlier this month I noticed Musician's Friend had 1 used Tweaker Combo in stock and the price was a tad over $500, which made it eligable for free international shipping. After a quick call to Musician's Friend to confirm that the shipping would be free I got out the credit card.

An initial bungle on their end regarding shipping method led to the amp being returned to them and my order cancelled. Several calls later I was ensured that the mistake wouldn't happen again and re-ordered.

The amp shipped out on Monday and this afternoon I received a rather ratty looking box. I was expecting it to be another week at least to clear customs etc...

which contained my new amp!

I ended up only paying for the amp... no shipping, customs or VAT! I'm super pleased and the amp sounds great!!

I think most egnaters have switchable voltage.

That is a hell of a deal.

Exactly this! 230v/110v switchable, which is why it was so tempting! Easy as sliding a little toggle switch...

Yup, ended up paying a little over R3900 (and a couple of phone calls to the US)...

I'll post some impressions once I've spent some time with the amp!

There's a snag. That only applies to used goods and the free shipping is only for products more than $500. So you must wait for a secondhand Egnater worth more than $500. You can always pay them more in order to win.

Just take a look at the list of used amps over $500. It'll make ya drool. When I looked last night there was an Egnater Rebel 30 1x12 combo for example. Various "custom" Fender reissues for around the $1,000 mark (imagine getting a Twin Reverb shipped from the states for free ?). So I don't think you'd have to wait all that long for what you want to turn up.

I'm still enjoying my amp immensely!

Apart from having a nice jam on Saturday I put it through its paces on Sunday at church... what a difference!

I used the vox voicing and I was blown away by the tone and how well it sat in the mix... everyone was complementing me on tone and how much better it cut. I still need to properly figure out how to use the eq knobs, but I didn't have any problem in getting a tone that I liked. It also looooves pedals. My TS sounds great through it and my OCD (set to lowish gain) gives me great alternative to the TS mid hump sound... I'm still contemplating whether or not to run the Nova Delay on the effects loop. Sunday I set the amp up pretty clean and used the pedals for drive, so no worries on the delay in line, but I might try driving the amp slightly harder and using my volume knob on my guitar to clean up the sound and use the drive pedals character and boost more than drive, in which case the nova might be better off in the loop. I don't know whether that's smart or not, but I'll give it a go...

I did however pick up something very strange... I opened up the amp on Monday to swap the ruby tubes 6v6s with matched pair of Tung-Sol's I have, only to find that someone had put plastic between the glass envelope and the retainer thingy going over the tube, which had off course melted and fused the retainer clip to the glass envelope of the tube. I didn't initially notice it becuase the the glass envelope of the Ruby's are black... ??? Some very careful heat-gun use and lots of scraping and sanding later I managed to get the clips clean and swapped in the tung-sols. I also changed the pre-amp and phase inverter to with my philips 5751 from my little 5 watt and a JJ 12ax7. Another slightly annoying thing was that the sovtek preamp tubes are fatter than normal tubes, so they were stuck inside preamp shield thingies... All told I could definitely hear a difference with the swapped out tubes... it sounded slightly less muffled... not a major change, but noticeable. I will probably replace everything with new Tung-Sol's, as the tubes actually belong to my little 5 watt...

Congrats on the new amp! The plastic may have been put in there due to tube rattle?

That was my initial though too, but one would think that everyone knows tubes get helluva hot... ???
