programmed it and while it sounded goodish through my lil vox mini on my ibanez it just made my ears bleed
That's the other thing: most people can't program decent sounding patches anyway. Chances are it sounds like ass, even on their own setup. ?
so thats next saturday arvies job ..start with the amp models and muck around til i get something li like
That might be a little optimistic. I'm happy if I can program a patch a day that I'd be willing to use. The initial "getting to know" a unit can take
days.
...idea is to create no more than 5 or 6 patches for all my needs though....
That's the ticket. Three or four "bread and butter" patches (basically clean, edge of breakup, crunch and maybe drive) for me. The rest are bonus, specialised "special effects" kind of things.
Something I usually do with a new unit is once I have most of my patches programmed, I'll start again with blank patches and try recreate my basic patches from scratch again, then A/B with my original versions. Almost without exception, the newer patches will sound better because while programming all the other patches I've gotten to know the ins, outs and "tricks" to the unit.
