I probably should have mentioned this a little earlier...
TJs acoustic music club has an open mike night the last thursday of the month at Marks Park in Jo'burg. (There are several rooms at the Marks Park club, usually the Jo'burg Press Club room is used for open mike nights).
It's pitch and play. There are 15 minute slots set up, starting at 20:00. You take your pick of all slots not already taken when you make your pick (if that makes sense).
R20 to get in. Drinks and reasonably priced pub grub are available from the bar at Marks Park.
The last couple have been pretty well subscribed with all slots filled.
Usually they set up with three mikes and three leads for guitars. You can play with your guitar miked or you can use a pickup.
Original music or covers are welcome.
TJs also has two "proper" shows a month. These in a bigger room with pre-arranged line-up. Cover charge stays at R20. TJs is a club, and they don't seek to profit from the gigs, but they obviously can't afford to lose money.
