Are you superstitious?

Jack-Flash-Jr

I probably fall into the somewhat category for reasons I can't explain. Recently put a random album mix together and ended up with Blues Funeral (Lanegan Band), Graveyard (Swedish bluesrock) and Henry's Funeral Shoe (Scottish garage) on the disc. I put the new Van Halen on to balance it out. Our most pragmatic (at least intellectually :D ) band member doesn't like a good practice before a gig.

(old forum) Poll Results: Are you superstitious? If so, what kind of things bother you/do you do?

Totally, turn back when I see a black cat.: 0
Somewhat. Adjust my strap 3 times exactly before I go onstage but black cats don't bother me.: 1
Observe superstitions for traditions sake or fun (pre-show tequila)..: 7
It's hogwash and people should ignore it.: 17

Yeah. I know it's all BS. We're psychologically adept at "counting hits" - remembering the times the superstition worked out, and forgetting all the times when it didn't. This can be shown easily when there is a more objective count of hits vs. misses - and it has been. Often.

But, as Jack says, we are humans, we are superstitious, and if it's harmless, I like to indulge. The moment you start to get anxious because you haven't done x or y random thing that has no causal effect whatsoever, you're taking it too far. I touch wood sometimes, and say, "Insh'allah" sometimes. But I don't worry if I don't.

Even with the practise thing, it's easy to see how a good practise right before a gig can set your expectations high so that it's unlikely that the show will match up (good practise is followed by "bad" show) and, conversely, that if if you have an unusually bad practise, the bar is set really low, and the show is bound to exceed expectations.

Well.. Superstition or habit.. Fine Line really..
Eg, I always sleep on one side of the bed, always put left shoe on first, always wear a particular shirt on matchday, I even had lucky shirts and caps which I would not, have not turfed even though if I look at it they'll disintegrate they're so old..

Not so sure its superstition as my being full of sh!t.. But I am a creature of habit in every sense of the word..

I dont walk under ladders or step on 3 drains on the street ?

I am not superstitious as such, but I can't have a good game of cricket unless the wickets and bails are perfect. Some small things like that set me off.

Riaan-Combrink

Absolutely a creature of habit. My stage set-up is always exactly the same. Audio interface plugs into exactly the same one of the multiple usb slots on laptop, plectrums placed only on left side of laptop, etc, etc. Capo has to be clipped onto the mic stand, etc etc. Throws my balance completely if anything is out of place. Not sure if thats superstition or OCD.

Im not superstitious at all...

I do have this weird phenomenon though where I always seem to have a headache when the weather is overcast. I've been trying to investigate it but no answer yet, happens almost without fail... Maybe it has something to do with the humidity or something ?

I'm not superstitious! It's a lot of junk. But I'll tell you this, when I play golf, I should have 5 long tees in my pocket. 4 white ones and one color one. And the one that isnt white should preferably be a natural brown one. Orange is OK but not the best. Blue is out. OUT! And green as well. On a day when the fairways are running hard, I must have at least one red tee but in my left hand back pocket. The red tee gives me height so that I dont run into too much trouble. But it makes a huge difference where I keep it.

Anyway, the white ones are for teeing up with. the color ones are for marking and cleaning gunk from the grooves in my wedge. I have tried once or twice to use the color tee from the teebox and ended in horror.

If one of the white tees gets broken or lost, then there are three left and I must play three driving holes before I replace it. And then I must replace it. I've diverted from these routines before and it wasnt good.

But no, superstition has no place in my life. All the above is based on experience and not jsut whim or anything.

Compared to the Mayan Calendar sh&$, black cats crossing your path are worse than drinking raw sewage.

When you believe in things that you don't understand, Then you suffer. Superstition ain't the way

The mind is a funny thing, it creates reality.
If you believe youre not superstious then you wont be.
But if you think something bad will happen because of x, y and z chances are it will.
I got my drivers on friday the 13th,
would have been really louzy if i thought it was an ominous date...
Was my third attempt so maybe it canceld out, who knows.

I don't believe in superstition at all but now that I think of it a black cat crossed my path last Friday and I was mugged on Saturday night so I can see how someone can read too much into that.
