Serious Mike? and I thought that the Crate is awesome. I went like "awesome 120watts, foot switch, 3 channel", but no it looks like this is not the case. I would something that I can use on stage as well, but not something like a cab. Can't believe a Roland cube 30watt is gonna be better!? What about a VOX?

The crate is ok. Not much tone IMO. Excellent if you have a GT8/10 cos they don't effect the tone much. Then you can gooi mieles and have a very loud jol. My mate has one, we use it as a PA...
Vox, the cheaper ones aren't so cool. very harsh, great cleans not much else.
Thats mine... :-[ Love it to bits, but I need the cash for something else.

Oi vey, dude, unless you're swimming in cash and can happily buy kit no problemo, then don't discount your amp cos some users on a forum have an opinion that says the sound is crap. How does the old bird sound to you?
Also, as Donovan says, pedals in front of that thing will make it sound totally different..
I watched an established band play for years with a crate 212 live, he just had his boss gt8 through it, and his tone was fine..
Baby steps man, buying a prs isn't going to make you santana ( if you know what I mean).

Fiar enough. I have been playing guitar for a couple of years now, but mostly unplugged acoustic. In my opinion the clean channel of the amp sounds very nice on both my guitars. This is why I bought it. I figured that if you clean channel is sorted then there's nothing that effects cant fix ? Will most probably keep it cause I only use it for practice atm, only play through pa system when on stage. So no probs there.

How do you play through the PA on stage? Does the amp have an ouput that you plug into the desk?
Dev-Marco
Don't you my amp on stage. I go to the desk as follows:
My Guitar - DI unit - Snake
My amp is solely for practicing at home, but I would like to be able to use an amp on stage with my electric ?

Ah, so you're only playing the acoustic when on stage at the moment?
Dev-Marco
Jip, but I'm gonna start playing electric on stage now as well. I used to own a Jackson King V. Used to play with a drummer, sommer at home metal riffs etc. So I got a Fender to get a warmer kinda tone and to have an electric which you can sit and play with. So that's how the story goes. The crate was nice with a distortion pedal with the Jackson etc, but now my dynamics have changed a bit.

Hi M
I general take all the controls to zero. I find that with every pot there is a point when things start to come alive (nothing then all of a sudden it reacts). So I take them individually to that point and usually work from there. I find it usefull when I do gigs on amps I've never used. It works for me! It might help you.

This is the way i do it too.
Works very well for me. Kinda like finding the sweet spot on all the knobs.

I'm not sure who of you have experience with this Crate. I do.
A Cube would be a huge upgrade.
Yes, I had experience with the crate. Thats the one standing at church, but luckily something went on the circuitry, hence I want to convert it to a cab for now.

I read the first post and a few of the one's to follow, so I have not read them all. So, if what I say has been said, sorry.
However, I had both the GT212 and a MIM strat. So, I know where you are coming from. Unfortunately sold the Crate as it was just too loud! However, i really did love the tone on that amp. I'm not sure why guys are hating on that thing, mine sounded amazing! I now have a Ibanez tube amp and its great, love the tube tone. But it's not WORLDS better than the crate.
So, all that to say. Don't worry about spending more money. Plug your guitar in, sit and do what Don suggested, turn the EQ to 0 and slowly build them up until you get a nice tone (that you like) and then jam!
I found, personally, that my tone controls pretty much stayed at 12 oClock the whole time. Occasionally, i'd change it up in a live setting. but at home, 12 o'clock was good.

@Paul E
Kewl man. Thanx for that advice. I actually had to jam acoustic and electric last knight. So I took my crate, took everyone's advice, tune it from 0 to my liking and I must say the tone on the amp is very, very nice. I played a couple of songs and asked some friends afterwards how it sounded and people's responses were all positive. Maybe were just two lucky people who got GT212's that has a nice tone ?
Thanx for the help everyone ?

Crate is like Behringer in the way they get a knee-jerk reaction. Sure, they have created a lot of c#*p through the years and tend to a more aggressive solid-state tonality, but not everything they have ever done is along those lines and anyway, some people like aggressive, edgy drive sounds and punchy, ultra clean sounds.
Tone is where you find (or make!) it...
