Johnny Kongos

Anybody remember this musician? I see his FOUR sons have a band - Kongos - touring SA at the moment. I couldn't remember him but then I found this.

Oh yes...one of our early 60's SA products.
His mom Sylvia wrote a few hits for them (Johnny Kongos and the G-Men) which included "Johnny and the Mermaid" and "Tulips for 'Toinette", a huuuge hit way back. (you tube these).
He left for the UK around '65.

Johnny Kongos and the G Men consisted of Johnny on Lead, Errol Saunders on Drums ( passed away) Ian Sinclair on Bass (Passed away) and Henry Frandsen on Rhythm. Henry lives in Durban. I see him and his wife Pat once in a blue moon
After Johnny left for UK in '65 Peter Ross took over lead guitar and the name changed to "The Thunderbirds" which disbanded about 2 years later

Johnny & the G Men were one of the most successful SA groups

Hi Peter...! Nice to have another PE member on the forum...Henry and Ian also had a go at establishing a recording studio in PE around '69....recorded an EP with them way back. But you also drummed for other bands in PE in the 60's if I remember correctly ??

Just want to add.... there's a history to "Tulips for 'Toinette"....by account she was a friend of the Kongos family (in Brakpan) who passed away at a very young age

I had the pleasure of listening to Kongos (the 4 sons) live. They are absolutely amazing, one of my favourite 'small' bands to hit African shores.

I even messaged Dylan (the bassist) regarding some sound, and he was very prompt to get back to me. Super professional guys.

A slight hi-jack.......apologies ...... but here goes ....... :

I sort of vaguely remember in the early '60s (I was about 11-12years old) Springbok radio used to have a Saturday morning show for kids, (sponsored), called the "Hulletts 6-16 club", and AFAIR bands played live and members could go watch them.....kids of course ...... from about 11am-12noon.

I think The Dealians, (were they not from East London?), Johnny Kongos, 4 Jacks and a Jill, Emil Dean and The Strangers (little knowing that about 7-8 years later, I would be playing with The Strangers), and quite a few other bands played at this morning show, I think it was at Shell House!!!!

No, I did not see them live (Johnny Kongos and The G-Men), but I do remember those songs mentioned ....... geez, it seems like a thousand years ago.

A bit of useless info ...... ?

No info is useless Aubs.... ?
Yes the Dealians were from East London but before they changed name to the Dealians they were know as The Sheridons (Peter Richardson may want to add to this).
BTW: I am really sorry to hear that some members of the G-Men have passed away already.....
