I recently read a review of an album of a local metal act, lets call them Crudpedlers, on a local website. The review applauded the brilliant musicianship, especially the drums, the quality of the production, the insightful lyrics, and the creative song writing. The album was basically made out to e a flawless master piece.
I got my hands on a copy. In a word, its CRAP.
Basically, Crudpedlers are another band failing to be Cannibal Corpse, with no metronome in sight.
So I've done some digging, and it seems suspicious to me that the guy who wrote this review plays in another band that gigs with a Crudpedlers regularly. Also telling is the fact that I found a very positive review of the offending reviewers band's gig, written by a member of Crudpedlers.
On another site, in an article about a bands failure to launch their album at their album launch, the person writing the piece was making more appologies than the band did in their quoted press release.
Its the Itchy and Scratchy show everybody!
So, instead of moaning, again, I thought I's suggest we'd start doing reviews as a collective. Most bands make their stuff available on Band camp or Reverb Nation, so a few of us pick a band, give it a spin and lay our eggs. I suspect we'd reach a far more honest and accurate result than the standard, brown nosing SA music site would.
Being a metal super freak, my first suggestion would be Contrast the Water's album Perseverance. 'Metal Lick' posted a link to their album download previously.
