I don't recall anyone seriously saying music has to have guitar solos.
As for calling it masturbation, well, if you don't do it you're missing out. On both counts....
I know, I'm just saying in general, although I do like a good guitar solo.........and even a good sax solo................and.......
The one and only track I've posted in this forum has a guitar solo.
The riff is still king though, for ANY music.
Huh? Well so much for Beethoven then. Music is such a big universe and there are no recipes. You can have satisfying music without riffs or solos. If you bolt a riff or a solo onto a bum song then you still have a bum song.
Just to hammer home the point of "riffs" not being exclusively a guitar/guitarist thing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook_(music)
Even ambient music like The Orb, or Psychedelic Trance has good riffs.
The riff IS the song, it's not some douchebag guitarist trying to throw "smoke on the water" in every chance he/she gets, and then a 10 minute solo in every other chance he/she gets, and then "noodling" before the song starts, and then again after the song has finished......................maybe some "enter sandman" here and there for added koolness.
Show me how mistaken I am by pointing me to some satisfying music that has no riff/hook (and I do mean that as I'm genuinely interested :goodtimes?
