I'd say it's the other way round. Gumtree is global and started as an online site. If anything, they are a ripoff of Craigslist in the US. Junkmail/Capeads started as treeware and moved online.
The big downfall to sites like these is that when they start advertising in other media, they start pulling in all sorts of people you won't find on dedicated forums like this. From the casual person who has something lurking that they can sell, through the casual loons and to the serious scammers... ? They are worth keeping an eye on for the occasional really serious bargain, but otherwise too much PT. I'd much rather deal with other musos (who I know something about thanks to other interactions).
