Is it single ply or two-ply? It makes a helluva difference as single ply tend to tear where you don't want it to.

I went with b. always have had it like that for as long as I can remember. Easier to tear it with out mauling the roll. :roflmao:

I've actually given this some major thought. :-[

It's a given that the top surface is softer and that's the side you usually want to be using. Depending on your natural technique of unwinding the roll you will get a different side of the paper and this will usually change depending on which side wall the holder is mounted. And... (pay attention - this is important... ?) it reverses when you are standing in front of the toilet or seated on it (hence the eternal battle between the dominant male of the household and the dominant female). So there is no single "right way".

So...

The short answer is: "whichever way your wife says is the right one". ?

This used be a topic of great discussion when it was just me and the wife.

Having three kids aged 2-13, and being the only one who replaces anything in the household (water in the water Bottle, salt, Sugar etc) I have now given in to the family and the roll does not sit in the holder anymore.

a lonely out of place Bog Roll on the top of the toilet, but quite handy because you can make use of both methods

+1 except it's perched on top of the towel rail near the toilet so my two year old son who thinks he's a super model can't eat it :-[

from a theoretical engineering perspective, under is the way to go. In this case, the moment effected on the toilet roll when pulled will act in opposition to the moment on the toilet roll holder as a result of gravity..

however, as we know well theory and practice are two different things. there are also sociological, psychological and philosophical aspects that needs to be considered.

i'm a 'b' man m'self. however, i don't care about the orientation, i'm much more concerned with stock and supply levels. somehow they seem to get used up a heckuva lot quicker than they should be. and there are never spare rolls in the cupboard by the loo, where they should be.

can i get an amen?

Amen Dom...mine also always on the top shelf behind me...so I have to stand up and turn around and....well no use crying over spilt...milk...my gf is 1.5m, so I guess I only have myself to blame...

That sounds like a supply and demand problem you have. Also, judged from your griping it sounds like supply-side management isn't working so maybe you should consider demand-side management.

There's an average of 400 squares on a roll of toilet paper. If you use the toilet once per day and use three squares every time, one for the upstroke, one for the downstroke and one for the polish, a roll should last you close on 4 and a half months.

I would just like to add that it also depends on the construction of the TP roll holder. In case it is a hinging type, B is the only one that works. The roll rests against the wall at the back end and A will just tear in the wrong place.

If it is put the A way it is such a mission to find the end and it just tears randomly

deefstes, you never did serve in the military, did you? you only need one square per visit. ?

anyone else who did not serve in the military, and requires an explanation of the particulars of how to get away with only one square per visit, feel free to pm me. i'd very much like to stay on this forum and firmly believe a public explanation would result in, at the very least, a stern warning.
