I picked up "The Buddy Holly Story" the other day and have been meaning to watch it. A great movie with Gary Busey in the title roll. worth a watch
I'm a bit weirded out that the author seems to describe the tour conditions as a kind of plucky, can-do, thing compared to indolent modern rockers, when it was actually grotesque exploitation. "Incredibly the tour continued..." if you know anything about the tours it would have been incredible had the promoters done anything but panicked at the potential loss of income and immediately brainstormed ways to keep the tour going. Those artists were very close to indentured labourers. The Rolling Stones don't tour like that because they eventually got out of the control of unscrupulous A-holes like that.
I had a good long listen to American Pie the other day. I still like the song (it's a great song), but it's historical revisionism of the three dead men as angelic - when they were actually made out to be the agents of Satan at the time - and the homophobic slurs against Mick Jagger really kind of ticked me off.
