Decided to set up one night a week as a family music night. And tonight it was!

Daughter 13, Son 10

Daughter had her way and wanted to learn Adele's 'Someone like you' (after all the discussion today :?)

Worked it out and dropped it to the key of G, so taught my Son G, D, Em, C and my daughter played the chords on the keyboard( the riff on the recording). Both hadn't learned any chords yet, so it was a bit hectic for the first 30 minutes, but did we have fun when they got it...

I found the whole thing quite fruitful and liberating for the kids, My son was so impressed that he knows 4 chords to go along with the riff of 7 nation army by the white stripes. His next request is 'I shot the Sheriff'

Now to buy a decent second hand Casio Keyboard, the one we have sounds like a cheap ice cream truck recording.

I'm planning a similar endeavour. I got the kids watching the Beatles Help movie. I've heard them singing the songs at random. Next I need to learn the chords.
I love that movie. Ringo:"Well, you know, I thought she was a sandwich".

This a great idea. I also started with this. I think we spend hopelessly to much time in front of the TV and not enough on quality time with our families!

That is great Squonk. It almost makes me jealous for not having a daughter of 13 and a son of 10 ? Before you complain too much about having to work out an Adele song though, be thankful she didn't bully you into a Justin Bieber song ?

Just a question, what age do you guys think I should start teaching my boys to play guitar? They are 2 years old and 6 years old (6 years old today actually, happy birthday!).

They both have their own guitars, but I am not sure when to start a routine with them, I know the 2 year old is still young, but maybe its time the 6 year old spends less time on the psp and more on the guitar... ?

I got my daughter a 1/2 size classical for her first birthday and both she and my son do pretty well on the harmonica already.... ?

A difficult one Shaun. I have been exposing them to music from an early age!

Hasn't worked on my daughter, she is the typical teenager Myley Cyrus, Bieber, Selena Gomez, and now Adele. the sad thing is that she has the talent, she does a lot of talent shows for singing etc. I gave her one guitar lesson and she was great but it hasn't taken off yet. Still time!

My son on the other hand has a less than typical taste in music(for a 10 year old) The White Stripes, Alien Ant Farm, Goo Goo dolls and now he likes a bit of Bob Marley, where he hears this stuff I have no clue! He approached me at the end of last year about learning something for the school talent show and he wanted to do the 7 Nation Army, which he picked up quickly.

So there is no enforcing on my part, I am letting it happen naturally

I also dont want to try and force playing guitar on him as I have seen parents doing that and it very rarely works out. But I do want to sit him down maybe once a week and give it a shot. He has shown some interest in playing drums which I also want to try and encourage as much as possible.

Sounds like you got a good thing going there squonk, spending quality time with your kids and getting time to jam.

Squonk, I may have been very critical of Adele in the other thread but that was partly tongue in cheek. I reckon for your daughter to learn Adele songs is fantastic. We all started out along our musical path playing songs that we (and our friends) liked. I distinctly remember scoring plenty of points in varsity, serenading girls with Michael Learns to Rock ??? - and it worked ??? ???

Besides, Adele actually has decent songs. I rate her several levels above Cyrus, Bieber and Gomez.
