But there are certain hints. If someone doesn't like any early blues, then they clearly haven't got it. And there are a lot of "blues fans" out there who don't see the point of anything pre-SRV.
I dunno. I won't say that I
dislike Robert Johnson, for example. But I generally just listen to older stuff as an investigative thing, rather than listening to it just for fun. I'd rather listen to more modern stuff, and maybe that's mostly because it's just what I was introduced to first: in my personal listening chronology, the newer guys came earlier (if that makes sense). It's not really more complicated than that. But I definitely wouldn't arbitrarily define a particular artist (other than Johnson himself) as being the only point beyond which you should bother listening. Texas blues is great fun to listen to and to play, but I can't listen to too much of it. I like me some acoustic blues (Bukka White style), I like me some John Lee Hooker, I like me some Cream, etc.
I'll stick my neck out and say I don't quite get the whole Peter Green thing, although I'm still trying to. I'm going to get hold of the album recommended earlier and see if that makes any difference. I really like his voice, but I can't say I see what all the fuss is about regarding his playing or his tone, but maybe I've heard the wrong stuff. I mean, Gary Moore stole his guitar and REALLY showed us what it could do. When it comes to tone-obsession, I can totally
get Gary Moore's LP tone.
