So along with all my other projects I've been trying to get this little 5 Watter done. Finally have everything( yay ). So this is how it started and progressed so far. Blank Board Getting the holes drilled Turrets and components on Yay!!! Got the blank chassis. Finally got all the holes done. Checking where the Trafo's should go. Time to get some color on that chassis..... mmmm Primer. Oooooh Massey Ferguson Red.... ? or tractor red ?

Dude, it really doesn't take much skill to stretch a bit of tolex over some boxes and replace a few parts, which is essentially about all I've done so far. I'm a greenhorn when it comes to electronics. I'm hoping that with a healthy respect for electricity, enough common sense to prevent me from killing myself, and the determination and general stubborness to learn anything I put my mind to, in time I'll learn enough to build my own amp from scratch. Until then, I'm enjoying watching you guys and stealing with my eyes...

Steal away buddy. There are a few books that will be plenty of help and intelligent people here on the forum. I still want to get to the design from scratch part myself, but all in due time. ?

Check that the OT's secondary’s are not already earthed inside the transformer if it is earthed you need to double check your polarity on the 4/8/16 outputs as it may be shorted to earth via you wired SP- output jacks.

I'm using a Hammond 125DSE Trafo on the out put, but will check for the earthing.

Been playing some what with this amp now and it's very very bright ??? and as it happens in a different post I wanted to find out what to build for a boost to the OD of the amp. Attila gave me a few good ideas and then mentioned a mod he did which he calls his mood switch :yup: oh yeah... So on the first half of the 12ax7 there is a 0.68uF bypass Cap across the Cathode resistor... I decided to up it a bit and messed with a few cap values I have at home... Eventually I settled on a 2.2uF Cap. The gain on the bass freq was boosted very nicely and suddenly the tone stack has a whole new life of tweakability. ? ? ?

What tone stack did you settle on Nickster ?

I used a fender tone stack found in the tone stack calculator.

500k lin for treble and bass, 20k lin for mid.
470pF for treble and 47nF for mid and bass with a 100k resistor between treb and and bass caps.
Mid pot is also connected like the bass pot where the wiper is connected to the cap and one of the pins of the pot.

Building your own amp is a very satisfying endeavor.....especially when it works......

You got me thinking again......I recently rewired my TC-8W and changed some of the tonestack values....I think it's time to dive back in and do a few more mods........ :-\ :-\
