My signal only goes stereo with Guitar Rig??

I use Ableton and I use Guitar rig, but for some reason, I can only pan my signal left and right once I've used guitar rig as a plug-in. Otherwise I can only pan the signal left, and right it will go quieter then off.

Initially when I record, I record with the stereo setting (Ext In 1/2) - but only half the signal meter lights up. - why is this?
I am a noob with recording so excuse my ignorance - I google where possible

You need to record the guitar in mono. Then the same signal gets fed to both left and right inputs on Guitar Rig.
