Hey Chaps, So in my attempt to avoid purchasing the wrong stuff I am requesting advice from the esteemed GuitarForum experts. What would be the first 2 or 3 items that I would need to get my stomp box collection and setup going? Cheers Gary

I agree with Joel, and will go further and say even if you gig, you most likely don't need pedals straight away. They are only good if you need a bunch of different styles of overdrive/distortion and warbling and zany sounds at your disposal at any time.

Also, you can make new and interesting music with only a guitar, cable and an amp. There is no evidence against that notion.

Then again, you may like the pedal's sound better than the amp's sound. Go for it. Just remember, pedals are a pain in the bum.

I'm with Makepeace on this one. Guitar > cable > amp is an awesome sound, but a little limited, texture-wise. Fine if that's the only sound you want/need, but you shouldn't try stop someone else from experimenting. There is room for both in every player's arsenal. You could be nipping a young David Gilmour, Adrian Belew, Matt Bellamy or Tom Morello in the bud.

No they aren't. Pedals are awesome. It's your sound man, do what you want to do, as long as that includes getting a decent amp before investing in pedals ? I like to think of it as your amp being the meat of your dish, and your pedals are your veggies or whatever, and they need to compliment your amp. Certain pedals sound great on some amps, and awful on others.
