You are correct in saying Die Antwoord are aiming at a different than mainstream audience, however that is still a pretty big breakthrough with a lot of profit to be made a lot of people. I dont think with there music as abrasive as it is they ever intended to go to mainstream. I actually belive they had the option at one point when signed to some large label, but left due to the fact they wanted to be more "in your face" and made there own Zef label.
tasteless representation is dependent on the person, however I don't deny a lot of there content could be taken as offensive, but at the sametime I think you would get that with any art and culture clash. There are some SA residents who appreciate it, and yes... a great deal of foreigners who LOVE it. But thats my point they took some pretty extreme examples, languages, stories, parodies, and stereotypes of a multiple number of South African cultures and sold to an overseas audience as a sort of KISS styled character setup.
FOr that I think they are genius because that would have never sold in SA and I dont think was intended to.
As for the music, I think its commonly tread on that "hip hop" Rap etc are lesser forms of music, which I do not agree with. I dont think there is some terrible rap music out there the same as some terrible Rock music (hello Parlatones, seether and Nickleback). Can I convince you guys that Die Antwoord are good musicians too??? NO, I doubt it. But I will say they have a tremendous way with lyrics, flow, and overall song layout. There Performance is captivating, there stage character is amazing. No guitars sadly, but who cares really, my guitar can be more of a crutch than anything when it comes to making music.
I'm not so sure about this Mika...? Their 1st youtube videos were noticed by some people and through word of mouth it spread like a virus from here to everywhere
