I obviously have to clarify what I initially said here, I would have thought it was quite clear, bit I guess not.
No. It was not clear. You wanted us to ignore the context of this thread - the appropriateness of signature models for dead artists - when considering your metaphor, but you did not ask us to do so. Consequently I tried to give an explanation of why the comparison did not fit, in this context, without getting upset about the whole thing.
I'm sorry, but if you read what I posted it's quite clear. To precis:
it's my opinion that Fender isn't "cashing-in" on a dead artist, I believe that Fender have done this because there's demand for it: Cobain and Nirvana, while never being my cup of tea, were clearly a HUGELY influential band in their day, and they remain hugely influential to this day. I went on to explain, incidentally, how I don't believe Fender is "cashing-in" on Stevie Ray Vaughan either, and I think it's quite obvious that nobody believes that Gibson is "cashing-in" on Les Paul either, hence my question "Is Gibson cashing-in on Les Paul now that he's dead?", which was a rhetorical question (figure it's best I point that out since it might not be so blindingly obvious as I at first assumed).
That's what I said.

So? Kurt Cobain signed a deal with Fender to have his name put on the Jag-stang signature. Now I'm not going to claim that I know what the terms of the contract included, for all I know it may have been a deal for Fender to use Cobain's name in perpetuity. In fact, there's even kind of a precedent to this when Gibson released the SG originally under the Les Paul name, and Les Paul didn't like it, so Gibson changed name from Les Paul to SG. If Gibson were to do this again, now, then one can kind of appreciate that Les ain't around to object to it this time and that would be pretty off-colour on the whole, but then again, to my knowledge Les never played the SG-shaped "Les Paul" while Kurt obviously did play Mustangs... so Ted McCarty designed the Les Paul and not Les Paul himself... well, Kurt didn't design the Mustang but he still played them. Clapton didn't design the Stratocaster but he's still got his name on the headstock....
Oh shoot, there, I've really gone and done it now: by mentioning Clapton in the same post I've now inadvertantly compared him and all aspects of his life, career, EVERYTHING, directly to Les Paul AND Kurt Cobain!
Now I'm in REAL trouble!
