Ever noticed how the arrogant ones generally can't play a lick?

It's odd how the same sales people I spoke to when I started playing
guitar are sometimes still around now that I'm a qualified musician.
And if they were asses about it, it is rather funny in a way.

I have a gripe about a past encounter... No names... There used
to be a guitar salesman at Musica Instruments in Atterbury Value Mart (Pretoria).
I think this was roughly 2002. He once badmouthed a product (product A) I was buying above
their product from another store and upon discussion with the other store I realised they
Could never have stocked product A because they don't deal with them... That's not even the gripe.

I understand that guitar salesmen often have to deal with rock star wannabees
all day and that it warps them after a while, but some people can be asses about it.

He later worked at a place in Jean Avenue... Jean music village possibly... where there was a Brian May
point to point Hand-wired Vox AC30. 1 of 300 made world-wide... for R19 000. I had a Marshall JCM 900 stack
and was trying to make a deal, my stack plus R10 000 for the amp, but he was not only not interested in the deal,
he was repeatedly rude about it. Anyhow, I got so frustrated that I literally felt emotionally messed up for the
following 3 days. My then-girlfriend said "This had better not be about that amp!". ?

I then bought a 1981 AC30 from Music Connection CT for R8000 plus R1000 shipping without ever hearing it.
I was happy with this....
A few months later I'm at 3CI church... talking to Fuzz or Allan Smith(don't recall which) and I see the amp on stage...
Long story short... it was bought after being marked down to R5000 from R19 000!!!!!! really?!!!

so A: suck it guitar sales-person!
and B: Damn I wish I had that limited edition amp at almost half the price of mine!

epictring

They marked it down that much..new? I can't believe it.. ??? ??? ???

I think the store nearly went bankrupt... so that was a last resort.
The sales person was even scoffing at me saying " But I get guys who come in here
and buy the Vox for R19000 blah blah blah and I would have to sell your amp on the
floor first blah blah blah..." What an arse.

Good thing you ended it. Would never have worked out!

I was still contemplating whether or not to play guitar when I saw this movie. After seeing Woodstock and a documentary on Jimi Hendrix, seeing JB's guitar was enough to make me go "Right, that's it, I'm getting a guitar."

Marshall in Woodmead will never see another cent of mine.

About a year ago I was perusing their six-stringed selection and opted to buy one. R9k. Not exactly a cheap purchase.

So I get home and check some specs online about the guitar I bought also, specifically pups as these were unmarked metal covers. So I read online that they are in fact SD's, but, all the pics I found had the SD engraving on the covers. I decided to phone the shop and the guy who, 2 hours before was super helpful, was now the biggest dick I've dealt with in a long time. I only wanted to verify the pups in the guitar, but he was responding as if I have asked him if I could bang his mother or something! Total @ssh0le. (The reason for this was that I read once that a guy took in a guitar for a service with them and when he got it back the pups were swopped, so I was a bit suspicious)

It's a pity since they're around the corner from where I work and a quick pop in over lunch is always good, but after that, never again.

Anton & Music Connection now sees most of my cash. Yes, it's a bit of a drive that cannot be completed over lunch easily, but, I can deal with them via email (yes, they actually respond) to set up deals or ask questions. And when all's good I just pass by in the afternoons.

Power to the people... Guitarists get enough trouble at music stores... that is fraud.

Depends what you want... pre sales is also iffy in my experience!

The one in PMB is quite bad, I personally dont like it. It feels uncomfortable being in there. The salesmen do need some sort of training or something, they just dont seem approachable.

On the other hand, Dbn North has a great shop, with friendly guys too. A couple of them do come across as arrogant but I kinda like it coz they seem passionate. My favourite music shop is in Glenwood. Friendly staff and straight up good guys. Maybe try head down to Durban next time?
