Hi,
I have recently gotten a second hand Epiphone Les Paul Special. It was in need of quite a bit of work when I received it as it wasn't in the greatest nick. I cleaned all the metal as there was quite a bit of oxidization that had occurred. I put new strings on and set the guitar up. It's now playing really well for one thing, it is EXTREMELY bassy (if that's even a word).
Even with the bass on the lowest setting there is a deep bass sound.
Are there any setup tricks that I can try to maybe improve this, other than new pickups etc. That is a plan for the future, but distant future! Someone has mentioned that playing with pickup height may help.
Thanks

well, is it stock?
if not check the pots, should be a 500k, maybe the pup is backwards?
Easiest fix though would be trying a different pot. Theyre cheap and easy to change.
edit* meant pots, not caps

Just to be clear: when you say "with the bass on the lowest setting", you mean with the tone controls set full up on 10? And you are comparing to other humbucker guitars (if you're used to Strats, humbuckers do sound quite dark)? And this is even when the pickup selector is set to "Treble"?
If so, I think it's a wiring problem - either a tone pot is shorted (if so, you'll hear no tone change as you turn the tone controls). Or it could be a bad joint somewhere - for that you'll have to check all the joins for anything suspicious.
Is the guitar very powerful? Powerful pickups tend to lack treble...

One of the alternatives not mentioned is to play around with the two adjust scres by the side of the humbuckers. If you put the bass side further away from the strings than the treble side, you pick up less bass. Usually straight after doing this you notice that one or two strings are significantly weaker or stronger than the ones right next to them. This is what the six small screws on the pickups are for: again further away is less volume, closer is more. The pickup height as a whole is another story altogether. Closer to the strings sounds quite different to further away; set it to match the volume of the neck pup to the bridge pup and to suit your style.
